Michael T. ChaneyMichael T. Chaney is a member of the firm's Management Committee and is Co-Chairman of the firm's Commercial Practice Group. His practice is concentrated in the fields of business and commercial law and creditors' rights. He is part of the firm's Commercial and Alternative Dispute Resolution practice groups. Mr. Chaney has been named as one of The Best Lawyers In America. His clients include numerous local and regional businesses, as well as several Fortune 500 companies. He has also served as an arbitrator through the American Arbitration Association.
Mr. Chaney is a lifelong resident of Charleston, West Virginia. He majored in accounting at Duke University, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1970. In 1973, he graduated magna cum laude from The University of Michigan Law School. He is a member of the Order of the Coif. Mr. Chaney is admitted to practice in all state and federal courts in West Virginia, as well as in the United States Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is a member of the West Virginia State Bar, and served on its Board of Governors from 1987 to 1990. He served as a member of the West Virginia Lawyer Disciplinary Board from 1998 to 2004 and was Chairman of that Board from 2003 to 2004. He was on the Board of Directors of the West Virginia Bar Foundation, Inc. from 1995 to 2001, and served as President from 2000 to 2001. Mr. Chaney is a former member and President of the board of directors of the Marmet Hospital Foundation For Crippled Children, Inc., and was a director of the United Way of Kanawha Valley, Inc. Currently, Mr. Chaney serves on the Economic Development Committee of the WV Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of the board of directors of Mid-Atlantic Holdings Inc.
Among Mr. Chaney's achievements include being listed in the 2008 and 2007 West Virginia Super Lawyers for Business/Corporate.
