Flood pic 4Charleston, W.Va. (June 29, 2016) — Nearly a week after severe storms produced catastrophic flooding throughout The Mountain State, Kay Casto & Chaney jumped to action to help those individuals and businesses impacted by weather devastation.

Within the firm, lawyers and staff members responded to community calls for help by donating cleaning supplies, personal hygiene products, non-perishable foods, and pet care items. Goods will be delivered to emergency drop-off sites managed by Union Mission, Mountain Mission, and the Kanawha-Charleston Animal Shelter.

In flood-ravaged areas, KCC members dedicated time in shelters and medical units set up to assist families in need.  Tom Ewing (Managing Member, Fayetteville) and his wife, Mindy, have been organizers of shelters in Fayette County since doors opened.

Flood pic 3The firm’s IT specialist, WK Munsey, helped to organize a “Tribute Run” to honor the memory of two local women who lost their lives in raging Elk River floodwaters.  Munsey and 200 local runners raised more than $3,500 for aid, which is being hand-delivered today to hard-hit areas in Greenbrier County.

Luci Wellborn, a member of KCC, has spent this week in Alderson and White Sulphur Springs, now considered disaster areas within the Greenbrier Valley.  Wellborn is assisting the West Virginia Presbytery as a disaster team volunteer, traveling house to house to survey damage and to offer resources and pastoral services.

Finally, John McGhee, a member of KCC and the President of the West Virginia State Bar, has activated the organization’s committees to help provide legal counseling to fellow attorneys, businesses, individuals, and families affected by flooding.  Legal Aid of West Virginia and the West Virginia State Bar are working together to create a disaster relief website that will link to Legal Aid’s homepage and provide links to organizations and services. If firms are willing to volunteer time and expertise to help victims, McGhee encourages attorneys to visit http://www.lawv.net/Get-Involved/Volunteer to sign up.

There are many more stories of active involvement, which will be shared in the days and weeks to come.  For now, the goal is to donate generously by serving others.
